5 tips for Maintaining your Car’s Exterior

  • Jacob McComber
  • 31 October ‘20

Keeping the exterior of your car shiny and clean probably makes you feel good. Nobody likes walking out of their house in the morning and climbing into a scratched, dirty, and/or dented car. A pristine car free of nicks, dirt, and faded paint is a car that’s easy to enjoy driving!

Your car is a significant investment for you, and it takes a year-round, all-seasons beating just getting you from place to place. Taking care of your car’s exterior can be just as important as caring for what’s under the hood.

How to Care for Your Vehicle’s Exterior

The best part about keeping your car clean and pristine is that it’s easy, it doesn’t take that much effort and time, and it’s relatively inexpensive. Perhaps most importantly, though, regular maintenance will help a car maintain its resale value. Fresh-looking paint can make an old car seem new, and the condition of the exterior is often a good indication of the condition of the engine. After all, wouldn’t you rather purchase a car from someone who clearly takes the time to wash and wax it?

A car that looks appealing on the outside is proven to be effective in swaying potential buyers. We recommend following these 5 steps to properly care for the exterior of your car:

  1. Wash your car regularly

Washing your car on a regular basis – generally once every 1-3 months, depending on the weather where you live – is one of the best ways to protect and maintain the paint job on your car. The longer that dirt and grime remain on the paint, the duller the paint becomes. Ensure that your car remains dust and dirt free by taking your car to a car wash as needed – or, if you have time, wash it yourself!

2. Wax your car

Waxing your car twice a year goes a long way protecting your car’s exterior from the elements. Even though your car’s paint has a layer of clear coating, sun, rain, and snow can eat through it over time if it isn’t re-applied on a regular basis.

3. Have your car detailed annually

A professional detail will ensure that your car’s exterior is fully cleaned, which will help get rid of stubborn stains and mild scratches.

4. If possible, keep your car covered

Of course, not everyone has the option to keep their car indoors, but if you do have space in your garage, parking garage, or carport, keep your car there! If not, consider using a car cover, which will help keep your vehicle protected from the wind, precipitation, falling debris, and sunlight. After all, your car doesn’t need to get damaged when you’re not even using it!

5. If your car does get damaged, get it fixed ASAP

Sometimes, no matter how carefully you maintain your car, damage is unavoidable. Whether it’s the result of flying debris, rocks, or hail, minor scratches and dings happen – especially in Canada! However, damage worsens the longer you leave it, so if your car does get damaged, have it professionally restored as soon as possible.
